The UAE COP28 Presidency, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), and the Institute of International Finance (IIF) co-hosted a voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) roundtable. This virtual discussion was the second in a series of events on VCMs, bringing together global market participants committed to scaling climate finance.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, COP28 President-Designate, Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, and Mark Carney, UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and Co-Chair of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), co-chaired a roundtable discussion as part of the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact at the Palais Brongniart.

The consultation aims to develop voluntary guidance and practical steps financial institutions can take to support the financing of the managed phaseout of coal-fired power plants.

Ahead of the G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Summit in Niigata, GFANZ has announced Japan will become the first nation to host a GFANZ Country Chapter. The Chapter will open in June 2023 and will be part of the broader GFANZ Asia-Pacific (APAC) Network launched in June 2022.

The GFANZ Africa Advisory Board convened on November 7, 2022, for its inaugural in-person meeting at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt – where it approved the GFANZ Africa Network strategy and workplan, for 2023 and beyond.
